Este texto se propone examinar la autonomía de que disponían los jesuitas novohispanos en el siglo XVII respecto a sus autoridades romanas y, de ese modo, discutir el grado de validez de los análisis clásicos que insisten en la verticalidad del poder en la Compañía de Jesús. Por ello, este artículo se basa en fuentes primarias internas a la Compañía de Jesús. En última instancia, se trata de acercarse a la articulación interna de una institución supra-nacional en el marco del Imperio hispánico.
