Sumario:The recognition granted by Washington to the Benito Juárez government during the War of Reform and, above all, the signing of the McLane-Ocampo Treaty caused great alarm among the conservative authorities and their followers. Based on documents from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and the General Archive of the Nation, as well as contemporary newspapers, this article analyzes the measures taken by the Miguel Miramón administration to confront what was perceived as a grave threat and assesses the reaction of the press, corporations and the population of the regions where their armies dominated.
