Description
Résumé:This article aims to unearth the imaginaries of the historic conflicts between Peru and Chile, which generally refer back to the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). It analyzes the role played by soccer in the bilateral détente process under Peruvian President Augusto B. Leguía in the final years before his overthrow (1927-1929). The article aims to demonstrate that these athletic exchanges –to a certain extent– allowed for the construction of a feeling of fraternity between the two countries after a nearly fifty-year period of diplomatic tension due to the unresolved issue of sovereignty over Tacna and Arica. It also analyzes the impact of these events on the sports press in both countries through the large number of articles, chronicles, interviews and reports that appeared in major media outlets while soccer clubs toured abroad.
