It aims to show how these images were not a mere illustrative element, but that they had their own message, being pedagogical references for the political and literary elites when educating the population, useful for denouncing the vices and abuses of the colonial era, praising the heroes of the independence movement and encouraging the collective memory of recently-experienced events such as the French Intervention and the Second Empire. |

En el artículo se analiza el discurso de las litografías que ilustraron a las novelas históricas que aparecieron en los primeros años de la República Restaurada (1867-1870). Estos ejercicios visuales pretendieron afianzar la identidad nacional y mantener viva la llama del patriotismo liberal. Se intenta demostrar que dichas imágenes no sirvieron como un mero elemento ilustrativo, sino que mantienen un mensaje propio, que fueron referentes pedagógicos de las élites políticas y letradas para educar a la población, y que fueron útiles para señalar los vicios y abusos cometidos durante la época colonial, laudar a los héroes del movimiento por la independencia, y fomentar la memoria colectiva sobre los hechos recién vividos: la Intervención Francesa y el Segundo Imperio.
