| Sumario: | This article analyzes the legend of Princess Papantzin from its original elaboration by colonial chroniclers, through its questioning by 19th Century liberal historians to the attempts to integrate it into national culture as a legend. The goal is to identify the transformations of the story’s status and the changes in its representations of women and pre-Hispanic peoples. In the end, this narrative bears testimony to the process of secularization to the extent that it was constructed through religion and was later recovered by the fields of history and national culture, until it was finally discarded following the Revolution. |
