| description | During the revolutionary period, the Sierra Juárez of Oaxaca saw an armed uprising between May and September 1912. In the 1980s, Oaxacan historiography labeled this event as the “Ixtepejan Revolt”. In recent years, studies of the judicial archives have revealed the testimonies and political plans of the revolt’s leaders. These findings have allowed us to analyze their political discourse and demands, as well as the way in which these were adapted to the political context. This has made it possible to discern the internal differences among the movement’s participants, as well as their particular interests, which in turn has brought into question the label given to it over three decades ago. Perhaps, behind the mask of this revolt, there hides a less revolutionary, more complex phenomenon. |

Perhaps, behind the mask of this revolt, there hides a less revolutionary, more complex phenomenon. Durante el periodo revolucionario, en la Sierra Juárez de Oaxaca hubo un levantamiento armado de mayo a noviembre de 1912. En los años ochenta del siglo XX, la historiografía oaxaqueña denominó a este acontecimiento “la revuelta ixtepejana”. En años recientes, gracias a la revisión de los archivos judiciales, se encontraron testimonios y los planes políticos de los dirigentes de esta revuelta. Con estos hallazgos, se elaboró un análisis de los discursos políticos de los líderes con sus demandas y la forma en que se adaptaron al contexto político. A partir de esto, es posible advertir las diferencias internas entre los participantes en este movimiento y sus intereses particulares. Con ello, se cuestiona si es posible mantener la denominación dada desde hace más de tres décadas. Quizá bajo la máscara de esta revuelta se oculta un fenómeno menos revolucionario y tal vez más complejo.
