Análisis de la vida y obra de Manuel de la Bárcena como expresión de los retos a los que tuvieron que hacer frente las élites que hicieron las independencias. Se estudian tanto sus cambiantes y contradictorio posicionamientos político-ideológicos como, sobre todo, la lógica de un discurso que expresa la difícil adaptación a un tiempo nuevo de una burocracia imperial que en el lapso de apenas diez años vio cambiar casi por completo su marco de imaginación y comprensión del mudo.
