En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX aumentó el número de escuelas y programas de capacitación administrativa para formar a funcionarios competentes técnicamente y para enfrentar las necesidades de la burocracia en crecimiento en la capital mexicana. Este artículo analiza qué tanto estas escuelas alimentaron la burocracia y posibilitaron el ascenso social de quienes buscaban integrarse como empleados y empleadas a la administración de la ciudad de México. La ponencia busca explorar los rasgos de distinción a partir de la posición social, la identificación como clases medias, el empleo y la apariencia de los funcionarios del gobierno de la ciudad de México en las primeras tres décadas del siglo XX.
