En este artículo nos ocupamos centralmente de la influencia de Tomas Paine en las dos obras políticas más importantes de fray Servando Teresa de Mier. Nos interesa resaltar los conceptos, ideas, enunciados omitidos y apropiados por Mier del panfleto que el inglés publicó en 1776, Common Sense. Buscamos ubicarlos en su contexto narrativo para comprender los usos específicos que les determinó Mier, intencionalidades políticas en cada obra y su relación con el contexto de producción. Destacaremos las preocupaciones que ambos pensadores políticos tuvieron en común, el sustrato doctrinal que comparten. Intentamos realizar un tratamiento de las ideas desde la perspectiva de la historia de los lenguajes políticos.
