Resumo:The interpretation of American history based on the ideas of cultural diffusion started to gain influence at the end of the 18th Century and prevailed throughout the 19th Century. The artist Jean-Frédéric Waldeck was among the adherents to this school of thought, which oriented his creation of a large body of work that documented the monuments of pre-Hispanic Mexico. Through a summary of his controversial life, this article explores his artistic record and personal writings, with special attention paid to the work done during his 14-month stay in Palenque.
