En octubre de 1767 un apasionado tumulto sacudió a Papantla, un pueblo de indios del virreinato de la Nueva España. En este artículo analizo el suceso en un escenario amplio de estructuras de poder. Sostengo que el motín fue un instrumento político legal porque se fundamentaba en la noción del Derecho cuyo garante era el rey. Otros autores enfatizan las causas inmediatas del tumulto, pero marginan el papel del Derecho. En mi opinión, el motín fue una manifestación del orden político hispánico regulado por el Derecho.
