| description | Across the Hispanic world, the first two decades of the 19th Century were characterized by the development of a new political force called public opinion. The objective of this article is to analyze its appearance in Merida, Yucatan: though far from the great centers of power, this city actively participated in the same political, social and cultural processes as the rest of ibero-America in the period starting in 1808. The author centers their attention on the Sanjuanistas, a group active during this time whose goal was to defend the Constitution of Cadiz. Yucatan, far from representing a local case, instead reveals the ins and outs of new forms of sociability, above all in the field of political practices, and their embrace by society. |

Las dos primeras décadas del siglo XIX se caracterizaron en todo el mundo hispánico por el desarrollo de una fuerza política llamada opinión pública. En este artículo el objetivo es analizar su advenimiento en Mérida, Yucatán: aunque alejada de los grandes centros de poder, esta ciudad participó activamente en los procesos políticos, sociales y culturales que se sucedieron en Iberoamérica después de 1808. En particular, me centraré en los sanjuanistas, un grupo de opinión que realizó sus actividades en esta época, cuya premisa fue la defensa de la Constitución de Cádiz. Lejos de ser un caso específico, el yucateco ilustra con detalle los recovecos de las nuevas formas de sociabilidad, sobre todo en el campo de las prácticas políticas y en la acogida que les dio la sociedad.
