Este trabajo constituye un acercamiento a la historia del concepto "literatura" dentro del contexto específico de la Nueva España y México en el periodo comprendido entre 1750 y 1850. Desde sus orígenes latinos, asociados a las artes del buen decir, la literatura pasó a la Nueva España con el significado amplio de "erudición letrada". ¿En qué momento comenzó a tomar el rumbo hacia lo que hoy entendemos por "literatura", es decir, como creación artística? Este trabajo apunta a identificar dicho giro y a establecer qué connotaciones tenía el concepto en el periodo estudiado, en especial en lo relacionado con el surgimiento de un sentimiento patriótico.
