description This essay is an approach to the semantic changes of the concept of reason (razón) in Mexico between 1750 and 1850. This notion, originated in classical philosophy to define the scope of human knowledge, was transferred during the old regime to the political field in order to describe the qualities that a sovereign had to meet. In its Thomastic sense, the concept was not separated from faith. However, during the aforementioned period, the enlightened movement separeted reason from its religious connotations. It started to relate it to merely human qualities to know not only God, but the natural world. Eventually, the different political groups that existed in the early 19th century Mexico struggled because of it, speaking in the name of reason that had stopped belonging to only one mand in order to join plurality. Sine then, its meaning became synonym of truth. This did not mean that old expressions such as gente de razón ( people of reason), razón de oficio (ex officio reason) or razón natural (natural reason) were not used any more. What did change was its sphere of application.

Sine then, its meaning became synonym of truth. This did not mean that old expressions such as gente de razón ( people of reason), razón de oficio (ex officio reason) or razón natural (natural reason) were not used any more. What did change was its sphere of application.
