| description | This article studies the impact of phonographs on Mexican society through the analysis of the contemporary press and the consumer experiences of different social sectors. The first part of the article studies the debates on the machine’s role in the nation’s progress, alongside modern medicine and the postal service. It then addresses everyday practices such as the rental of phonographs, which allowed sectors without abundant resources to access this technology for their own enjoyment and that of their family, but also as a survival strategy. Finally, it examines testimonies and statistical data that show the consumption of phonographs by different social groups, from rich landowners to poor, illiterate peasants. In the second half of the 19th Century, humanity lived through an age of technological miracles. Inventions such as film, the telegraph, the telephone and the phonograph brought with them new sensory experiences that influenced the social reception of information and perceptions of time, distance, sound and images. |

En este artículo se estudia el impacto de los fonógrafos en la sociedad mexicana, a partir de las visiones expuestas en la prensa y las experiencias de diferentes sectores sociales como consumidores. La primera parte del trabajo, estudia los debates sobre la utilidad de la máquina en el progreso nacional, vinculada a rubros como el correo y la medicina. Luego, se abordan prácticas cotidianas como el alquiler, que permitieron a los sectores sin abundantes recursos acceder a los artefactos para el disfrute propio y familiar, pero también como modo de supervivencia. Por último, se exponen testimonios y cifras estadísticas que dan cuenta del consumo fonográfico por individuos de diferentes grupos sociales, desde ricos hacendados hasta pobres e iletrados campesinos.En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX la humanidad experimentó una época de milagros tecnológicos. Inventos como el cinematógrafo, el telégrafo, el teléfono y el fonógrafo trajeron consigo nuevas experiencias sensoriales que incidieron en la forma de socializar la información y percibir tiempo, la imagen, la distancia y el sonido.
