| description | In dialogue with the primary perspectives that have been developed to address the modernization of Latin America’s cities, this article addresses the vision of Mexico City’s urban working class as represented in the broadsheets reprinting the lyrics of popular corridos, which consistuted a tremendously rich cultural phenomenon. By examining the widespread production of these broadsheets throughout the bulk of the Porfirato up through the post-revolutionary period, this article contributes to an understanding of the working class’s experience of living in the capital. Three topics dealt with in the corridos are analyzed: housing problems, neighborhood social relations and changes in gender dynamics as a consequence of the precarity of family income in the new urban enviroment. |

En diálogo con las principales perspectivas desarrolladas para abordar la modernización de las ciudades de América Latina, se propone aquí acercarse a la visión elaborada por los sectores populares de ciudad de México, según la plasmaron en una manifestación cultural tremendamente rica, los corridos impresos en hojas volantes. Del examen de una vasta producción que abarca lo más sustantivo del porfiriato y termina en la postrevolución, surge una comprensión particular respecto a la experiencia de vivir en la capital para los más pobres. Se analiza tres tópicos que expresaron las representaciones sobre la experiencia urbana: el problema de la vivienda, la sociabilidad en las vecindades y las alteraciones en las relaciones de género producto de una economía familiar precaria en el nuevo escenario citadino.
