Thus, the category of race, explictly or implicitly expressed in different texts, allowed to define the limits of diversity within the nation, as well as to produce- -simbolically- the illusion of stable common identity, since it established the coordinates of a Mexican "we", as opposed to or assimilated to the indigenous and mixed with the castes of New Spain.

Entre 1750-1850, en México, la categoría de raza y sus mútiples significados se condensaron en un singular cuyo sentido apelaba a establecer la posición de ciertos grupos étnicos para ser absorbidos o rechazados por el imaginario de la identidad nacional; construida desde las élites, políticas, sociales o culturales. Así, la categoría de raza, explícita o implícitamente expresada en diferentes textos, permitió definir los límites de la diversidad dentro de la nación así como generar -simbólicamente- la ilusión de estabilidad de una identidad común, ya que estableció las coordenadas de un "nosotros" mexicano, por oposición o asimilación a lo indñigena y mezclado a lo que fueron las castas novohispanas.
