This essay focuses on the experiences with cinema of two men, José Zúñiga Heredia (1914-1985), a tailor who migrated from Oaxaca to Mexico City in 1939, and his son Pepe (b. 1937) who became a student, later a professor and director (1991-1993) of the Escuela de Pintura, Escultura, y Grabado La Esmeralda. I examine the role of Hollywood and Mexican film in the formation of their sensibilities, desires, aspirations, and notions of rights and dignity, and argue that cinema had an important role in the formation of a spirit of rebellion and a new masculine sensibility among male youth who entered higher education at the end of the 1950s. |

Si entre 1940 y 1980 el ascenso social en la Ciudad de México se atribuye a las oportunidades educativas y al empleo, también desempeñaron un papel significativo los medios masivos de comunicación. Este artículo se refiere a las experiencias cinematográficas de dos hombres, José Zúñiga Heredia (n. 1914-1985), un sastre que emigró de Oaxaca a la Ciudad de México en 1939, y su hijo Pepe (n. 1937) quien llegó a ser estudiante, profesor, y director (1991-93) de la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura, y Grabado La Esmeralda. Examina el papel del cine de Hollywood y de la Edad de Oro mexicana en la formación de sus sensibilidades, sus aspiraciones, sus nociones de los derechos y la dignidad y argumenta que el cine tuvo un papel importante en la formación del espíritu de rebeldía y una nueva definición de la masculinidad en los jóvenes que llegaron a la educación superior a finales de los años cincuenta.
