| description | Religious orders in New Spain have received considerable attention from scholars, particularly regarding their sixteenth century activities related to evangelization, education and their contribution to Mexican historiography. This article on the Franciscans is about a century and a topic relatively unexplored. By means of an examination of the documents pertaining to the candidates who became members of the Franciscan Province of the Holy Gospel in Mexico during the seventeenth century I attempt to offer an analysis of the social groups that made up this religious body. I am equally interested in showing the relationships and social connections of the friar's families with the most prominent groups of colonial Mexican society. |

Las órdenes religiosas en Nueva España han sido estudiadas en diversos aspectos de sus actividades, particularmente en las relacionadas con su participación en la evangelización, en la educación y en su aportación a la historiografía novohispana. La orden franciscana, en especial, ha recibido especial atención sobre sus actividades del siglo XVI. El presente trabajo versa sobre el siglo XVII en un campo todavía poco explorado. Tomando como fuente los voluminosos expedientes que los aspirantes a la orden tenían que presentar para ser admitidos ofrezco una aproximación a la composición social de los frailes de la Provincia del Santo Evangelio de México, así como los nexos y relaciones de las familias de estos frailes con algunos de los grupos más sobresalientes de la sociedad novohispana del siglo XVII.
