Description
Summary:Religious orders in New Spain have received considerable attention from scholars, particularly regarding their sixteenth century activities related to evangelization, education and their contribution to Mexican historiography. This article on the Franciscans is about a century and a topic relatively unexplored. By means of an examination of the documents pertaining to the candidates who became members of the Franciscan Province of the Holy Gospel in Mexico during the seventeenth century I attempt to offer an analysis of the social groups that made up this religious body. I am equally interested in showing the relationships and social connections of the friar's families with the most prominent groups of colonial Mexican society.
