The said notions are related to a generalized idea of the theater –particularly the opera– as a civilizing force; and also to the confidence thatMexicowas firmly attached to the train of progress and that the country would eventually become part of that mythic universe called the “civilized world”. |

Entre abril de 1827 y diciembre de 1828 uno de los cantantes de ópera más célebres del mundo, Manuel García, radicó en la ciudad de México. Sus actuaciones fueron el centro de atención de la opinión pública mexicana, que le asignó un enorme peso simbólico y político. Los artículos, crónicas y reseñas publicados en la prensa capitalina durante la estancia del tenor en la ciudad reflejan los diversos conflictos que dividían a la opinión pública mexicana en los albores de su vida independiente, pero también varias concepciones comunes que componían el imaginario político de las élites de la época. Estas concepciones tienen que ver con una idea generalizada del teatro —y la ópera en particular— como elemento civilizador; y también con la confianza en que México estaba firmemente enganchado al tren del progreso y que, llegaría a formar parte de ese universo mítico llamado “mundo civilizado”.
