Indeed, the Colegio was stripped of its most precious assets by a few individuals belonging to the rising oligarchy of original settlers and conquerors' descendants, supported in turn by the highest authorities' --Real Audiencia, Real Hacienda, and even the viceroy Luis de Velasco the Elder, with whom they held family ties-- disregard and/or passive, or even active, complicity. La decadencia brutal del Imperial Colegio de Santa Cruz, de tan brillante como efímera trayectoria, ha suscitado numerosos trabajos y reflexiones. El presente artículo subraya el factor económico que concurrió a su ruina, a menudo soslayado hasta ahora. En efecto, el Colegio fue despojado de sus bienes más preciados por unos individuos miembros de la oligarquía naciente constituida por descendientes de conquistadores y primeros pobladores. Estos fueron apoyados por la indiferencia y/o complicidad pasiva o incluso activa de las más altas autoridades, la Rea lAudiencia, Real Hacienda y hasta el virrey Luis de Velasco el Viejo, con los que habían establecidos relaciones familiares.
