Most works still revolve around wrítten documents, while iconographic ones serve, at best, as simple illustrations.In the last quarter of the nineteenth century, photographic images broke with great strength into the structures designed for writing, such as newspapers, reviews and magazines, completing the universe of letters, and sometirnes even invading it. Photography was suppoed to build an exact and objective representation of reality, a testimony haloed by the prestige of science and the illusion of progress characteristic or late-eighteenth century Western societies.The beginning of this important process concurred and related very closely with a qualitative increase in the State's interest and concern for childhood, particulary visible in education, pedagogy, pediatry and child hygiene.This article sets forth and supports two lines of research that rescue, analyze and interpret a rich and meaningful iconographic documentation from newspapers, in relation with two concrete Mexico City childhood problems that required the Porfirian State's institutional action and that were somewhat complementary: the control and repression of childhood delinquency, and the civic recruiment and recovery of children as future citizens. While the first one proves how infantile bodies became study objects capable of offering scientific truths for their time, the second one opens a reflection on how the civic act of imagining the nineteenth-century citizens passed through a process of differentiating childhood as a key stage in the construction of new values. |

La influencia que la imagen ha adquirido en todos los ámbitos de la cultura todavía no se refleja como es debido hoy día en los estudios de investigación histórica. La mayor parte de los trabajos siguen girando en torno a la documentación escrita, y lo iconográfico sirve, en el mejor de los casos, como simple ilustración.A partir del último cuarto del siglo pasado, en los soportes destinados para la escritura, como la prensa, las revistas y los magazines, la imagen fotográfica irrumpe con una gran fuerza, complementando el universo de las palabras y en ocasiones incluso desplazándolo. Con la fotografía se pretendía construir una representación exacta y objetiva de la realidad, una prueba testimonial acompañada de la aureola de prestigio de la ciencia y la ilusión de progreso características de las sociedades occidentales de finales del siglo pasado.Los inicios de este importante proceso coincidieron y se vincularon en forma por demás estrecha con un incremento cualitativo de los intereses y preocupaciones del Estado respecto a la infancia, particularmente notables en la educación y la pedagogía, la pediatría y la higiene Infantil.En este artículo se plantean y cuestionan dos líneas de investigación que recuperan, analizan e interpretan una rica y significativa documentación iconográfica de carácter hemerográfico relacionada con dos áreas concretas de la problemática de la niñez capitalina que merecieron la acción institucional del Estado porfiriano, que fueron de alguna manera complementarias: el control y represión de la delincuencia infantil y la recuperación cívica de los niños como futuros ciudadanos. Si la primera nos permite constar que los cuerpos infantiles se convirtieron en objetos de estudio susceptibles de proporcionar verdades científicas para la época, la segunda abre un espacio de reflexión para analizar en qué medida el acto cívico de imaginar a los ciudadanos en el siglo XIX pasaba por un proceso de diferenciación de la infancia como una etapa clave para construir los nuevos valores.
