During the first years of the twentieth century, the Scretaría de Instrucción Pública y Bellas Artes (Ministry for Public Instruction and Beaux Arts), opening as a specialized manager, aimed at regulating school hygiene permanently as a matter of public policiy. The scientific backing of doctors allowed the expansion of public intervention and gave place to changes in the estabished rules, increasing government responsabilities and creating new forms of collective action. School hygiene as public policy became manifest in how hygienists reorganized, rationalized, and cleansed educational facilities, linking schools to he surrounding city and creating crossing points between schools and families. |

Este texto explora cómo la incoporación de los médicos al proyecto eudcativo porfiriano permitió gestar un cambio institucional y utilizar las escuelas en la ciudad de México no sólo como centros de educación sino también como agencias sociales para la resolución de problemas urbanos. Al iniciar el siglo XX, la Secretaría de Instrucción Pública y Bellas Artes, a la manera de una administración especializada, se orientó a regular la higiene escolar de forma permanente como un asunto de política pública. Con el aval científico de los médicos se logró la extrensión de la intervención gubernamental y se generó un cambio de reglas mediante las cuales aumentaron las responsabilidades del gobierno a la vez que tuvieron lugar nuevas formas de acción colectiva. La higiene escolar como política de gobierno se hizo patente en la forma como los higienistas reorganizaron, racionalizaron, sanearon el espacio escolar, enlazaron los planteles a la ciudad y crearon un puente entre escuela y familia.
