After he was expelled in 1976, this period of contemporary Mexican press history became legendary and has come to be considered the beginning of a new relationship between the media and the Mexican State. The author points out that in order to understand the relevance of Excelsior, it is necessary to know its history from the inside, and establishes that the great dilemma during Julio Scherer's direction was trying to offer Mexican society a purposeful and democratic journalism from within an institution characterized by authoritarianism. |

En este artículo se analiza el periodo de Julio Scherer al frente del diario Excelsior. A raíz de su expulsión el 8 de julio de 1976, esta etapa en la historia del periodismo mexicano contemporáneo se ha mitificado, al considerarlo el inicio de una nueva relación entre los medios de comunicación y el Estado mexicano. El autor señala que para entender la importancia de Excelsior es necesario conocer su historia interior, y establece que el gran dilema de la dirección de Julio Scherer consistió en tratar de conciliar sus intentos por brindar a la sociedad mexicana un periodismo propositivo y democrático, basándose para ello en una empresa periodística en la cual el autoritarismo era la tónica general.
