| description | In Chile, the celebrations of their independence’s first centenary were monopolized by the ruling élite, which benefited from the occasion by expressing its political and cultural hegemony with festivals and public works representative in nature. At the same time, the centenary gave place to a phase of critical reflection on national situation, in which several important intellectuals of the time took part. This work examines these two aspects and attempts to establish connections between them, centered on the discourses of identity found in both. The author concludes with the ascertainment of a strong deficit in national integration, requiring corrections for future commemorations. |

Las celebraciones del primer Centenario de la independencia chilena en 1910 estuvieron monopolizadas por la élite dirigente, que aprovechó la ocasión para poner de manifiesto su hegemonía política y cultural mediante festejos y obras públicas de carácter representativo. Al mismo tiempo, el Centenario abrió una fase de reflexión crítica sobre la situación del país en la que participaron destacadas figuras de la intelectualidad de la época. El artículo examina ambos aspectos, intenta ponerlos en relación desde el punto de vista de los diversos discursos identitarios implícitos en uno y otro, y concluye con la constatación de un significativo déficit de integración nacional, necesitado también de corrección con vista a conmemoraciones futuras.
