| description | This essay seeks to analyze the possibilities and conditions offered by Mexico to the Jewish immigration during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, decades that coincide with an important trend of Jewish migration from Europe and the Middle East towards America. In this sense, the paper analyzes the transition of the Mexican immigration policy and certain governmental posi-tions: from being a liberal, open doors policy –which not only did not limit, but even encouraged Jewish immigration, among others– to a closed doors policy which, during the 1930’s, entailed a marked attitude of rejection towards the entrance to the country of a large number of ethnical, religious and national groups, including the Jews. |

El objetivo del artículo es analizar las posibilidades y condiciones que ofrecía México a la inmigración judía durante las últimas décadas del siglo XIX y las primeras del XX, momento que coincide con una fuerte corriente de emigración judía de Europa y el Medio Oriente hacia América. En este sentido se analiza el tránsito de la política inmigratoria mexicana y las posiciones gubernamentales, las cuales pasaron de un espíritu liberal y de puertas abiertas —que no sólo no limitaba, sino que promovía, entre otras, la inmigración judía— a una política de puertas cerradas, que durante la década de los años treinta conllevó una actitud de franco rechazo frente a la entrada de una gran cantidad de grupos étnicos, religiosos y nacionales al país, entre los cuales se encontraba el grupo judío.
