| description | This paper seeks to analyze the rebel movement in Michoacán, led by José Inés Chávez García, and which reached its height between 1916 and 1918. From a perspective that includes social, political and military history, this essay seeks to describe the said movement, which includes ingredients such as simple banditry, regional rejection of Carranza’s control, defense of the popular catholic religion against constitutionalist governmental decisions, as well as class struggles between Michoacanan popular sectors and haciendas, large farms, and certain urban populations. The analysis considers the relations between Chávez’s followers and rural communities, as well as the repercussions that the conflicts between political authorities and state military men had on the rebellion. |

El artículo busca analizar el movimiento rebelde michoacano encabezado por José Inés Chávez García, que tuvo como periodo de auge los años 1916-1918. Desde una perspectiva que incluye historia social, política y militar, se intenta caracterizar dicho movimiento, que tiene ingredientes de simple bandolerismo, de rechazo regional al dominio carrancista, de defensa de la religión popular católica en contra de las decisiones gubernamentales constitucionalistas, y ciertos ingredientes de lucha clasista de los sectores populares michoacanos contra las haciendas, los ranchos grandes y ciertas poblaciones urbanas. El análisis contempla las relaciones de los chavistas con las comunidades rurales y toma en consideración las repercusiones que en dicha rebelión tuvieron los conflictos entre las autoridades políticas y militares estatales.
