| description | During the last quarter of the eighteenth century, the Borbonic Crown sought to increase mining yields in Spanish America by means of technological modernization: transferring from Central Europe the amalgamation technique described by Ignaz von Born, with disappointing results. This work seeks to show how an economic project may fail due largely to underlying political and scientific ideas and prejudices inscribed within the discourses, values, and culture of the time, which prevented the actors from understanding the problem they sought to resolve. Thus, faith in the eventual triumph of reason, discovered in the eighteenth century but limited to Europe, guided the project's leaders in bringing that technology back to Spanish America. |

En el último cuarto del siglo XVIII, la corona borbónica quiso aumentar el rendimiento de las minas americanas mediante su modernización tecnológica. Para este efecto, se intentó la transferencia de una tecnología centroeuropea, el método de amalgamación descrito por Ignaz von Born, a la América española, lo que, sin embargo, derivó en resultados decepcionantes. Se quiere demostrar cómo un proyecto económico no prosperó porque los discursos o prejuicios políticos y científicos de los que partía, inscritos en los discursos, los valores y en la cultura de la época, incapacitaron a sus protagonistas para entender los problemas que pretendían resolver. De esta suerte, la fe en el triunfo de la razón descubierta en el siglo XVIII, pero ubicada exclusivamente en Europa, hizo a los protagonistas del proyecto reimportar a Hispanoamérica una tecnología que de allí les había llegado.
