Básicamente autodidacta, inició su formación profesional en el Museo Nacional de Historia Natural, en 1914, y en la Dirección de Estudios Biológicos de 1915-1929. Su biografía permite revisar el efecto que los factores externos a la ciencia, cómo los cambios de gobierno y los movimientos sociales, tuvieron en la vida de un científico de aquella época.
