| description | Through the analysis of Mexican livestock statistics and Sonora and Chihuahua regional census, this work discusses the condition of livestock farming in Northern Mexico during the first decades of the twentieth century, specially after the Revolution. There is no doubt that during this period, the absolute number of livestock heads diminished throughout Mexico, but “estate depredations” did vary geographically. In Nortehrn Mexico, livestock farming suffered more in Chihuahua than in Sonora, and herd recovery was also faster in Sonora. This analysis also allows us to underscore the role of postrevolutionary elites in rebuilding regional economies during the 1920’s. |

En este artículo, por medio del análisis de las estadísticas ganaderas de México y de los censos regionales de Sonora y Chihuahua, discuto el estado de la actividad pecuaria del norte de México en las primeras décadas del siglo XX, en especial, después de la Revolución. No hay duda de que, en términos absolutos, el número de cabezas de animales que existía en el país disminuyó, pero el panorama de las “depredaciones a la propiedad” fue geográficamente variado. En el ámbito regional, la ganadería chihuahuense sufrió más intensamente que la sonorense, y el proceso de recuperación de los rebaños en este último estado fue más rápido. Además, el análisis centrado en estas entidades permitió resaltar el papel de las élites posrevolucionarias durante la reconstrucción de la economía regional en la década de 1920.
