| description | When the juntista movement bursted out in the Viceroyalty of Peru, the society had already been living in constant agitation for several decades. The oligarchical aristocracies rearranged after the 1780 crisis kept up an open struggle for power. Racial, cultural, and political divisions became more visible. Among the Indians, defeat had left a void that was being filled up by local chieftainships and a collective sensibility returning to myths and building an ongoing memory of resistance. The Church and local authorities came to fulfill the role of guardians of collective rights, and an almost underwater current of legal and political resistance could be felt in the towns and villas of every region. This work seeks these new actors, rescued from oblivion, for they offer a new face for the rebellious towns and allow a bet ter understanding of the cultural and political processes in the Americas. |

Cuando tiene lugar el inicio del movimiento juntista en el virreinato de Perú, hacía varias décadas que la sociedad vivía en constante agitación. Las aristocracias oligárquicas recompuestas después de la crisis de 1780 sostenían una abierta competencia por el poder. Las fracturas raciales, culturales y políticas se hicieron más notables. Entre los indios, la derrota había dejado un vacío que llenaba en jefaturas locales y en formas de sensibilidad colectiva que volvían sobre mitos y seguían construyendo una memoria de resistencia. Desde la iglesia, el foro y en los mandos locales se ejercía el papel de guardianes de los derechos colectivos y una corriente casi subterránea de resistencia legal y política se podía percibir en los pueblos y villas capitales de las distintas regiones. El presente estudio indaga sobre nuevos actores, rescatados del olvido, que permiten ofrecer una cara nueva a los pueblos en rebelión y entender mejor una etapa crucial de los procesos de la cultura y la política de América.
