Este artículo propone considerar la eclosión de la nación española como sujeto político desde una perspectiva que no enfoque la cuestión desde el principio de nacionalidad sino desde la crisis monárquica. Efectivamente, esta aproximación puede ofrecer una visión atlántica, global y compleja del contexto en que se produjo el más rico de los procesos de formación de naciones y construcción de Estados del mundo occidental entre finales del siglo XVIII y comienzos del XIX. Considerar a la nación monárquica española que se diseña y fracasa entre Cádiz (1812) y Madrid (1820) como uno de los resultados de aquella compleja crisis ofrece una nueva perspectiva también para la interpreta ción de la “monarquía liberal” española del XIX.
