| description | This paper seeks to describe the radical discourse contained in the articles of El Cometa, a Zacatecan journal published during 1832. Based on an analysis of the rhetoric displayed by some of its articles and news reports, I try to identify the intellectual and ideological influences of the publishers, as well as the scope that such a discourse might have had among the general population. I am particularly interested in placing the journal and its publishing group within the framework of the political struggles that characterized the Republic during that period. My hypothesis is that this radical rhetoric, a product of the current situation in Mexico and of the different intellectual influences of the publishers, had a twofold orientation: in the first place, it was addressed to political groups, particularly the one that agreed with the radical sector of the Zacatecan political élite, and in the second place, to another more popular sector. In this last case, I propose that this rhetoric could have influenced the creation of what Scott describes as a “social space for a popular dissident culture” that facilitated social outbreaks at the time. |

El objetivo del presente ensayo es caracterizar el discurso radical difundido en los contenidos de El Cometa, periódico de Zacatecas publicado en 1832. A partir del análisis de la retórica inscrita en algunos de sus artículos y noticias, trato de identificar las influencias intelectuales e ideológicas de los editores, así como el posible alcance que la difusión de un discurso tal pudo tener entre la población en general. Sobre todo, me interesa ubicar al periódico y al grupo que lo publicaba dentro del marco de la lucha política en la que se debatía la República en esos años. La hipótesis que utilizo es que esa retórica radical, producto de las situaciones del momento en México y de los diferentes influjos intelectuales que recibían los redactores, se orientaba en dos sentidos: uno dirigido a los grupos políticos y, en particular, a aquel que comulgaba con el sector radical de la élite política zacatecana, y otro a un sector más popular. En este segundo caso, propongo que esa retórica pudo incidir en la creación de lo que llama Scott, un “espacio social para una cultura popular disidente” que hizo posible esta- llidos sociales en la época.
