| description | In January 1967 a fire destroyed the Altar del Perdón and almost all the choir stalls of the Mexico City cathedral. The following months and years witnessed a political, artistic, and religious debate on the best way to restore the cathedral's nave. Two factions arose almost at once, openly and harshly opposed. On the one hand, the Neo-Baroque party, led by the historians Edmundo O'Gorman and Francisco de la Maza, who ordered the civil and church authorities to restore the nave just as it had been before the fire. On the other hand, the Modernist party, led by the architects Mario Pani and Ricardo de Robina, who proposed a new emplacement for the altar and chancel, in order to adapt the cathedral's interior to the liturgical instructions dictated by the II Vatican Council. This work analyzes both parties' arguments and reflects on their relevance for the history of contemporary ideas in Mexico. |

En enero de 1967 un incendio consumió el altar del Perdón y casi la totalidad de la sillería del coro de la catedral de México. En los meses y años que siguieron se suscitó un debate político, artístico y litúrgico sobre el mejor arreglo de la nave catedralicia. Casi de inmediato se formaron dos bandos en pugna abierta y áspera. De una parte, el partido neobarroco, encabezado por los historiadores Edmundo O'Gorman y Francisco de la Maza, demandó a las autoridades civiles y eclesiásticas una restauración que dejara la zona afectada tal como se encontraba justo antes del incendio. De otra parte, el bando modernista, encabezado por los arquitectos Mario Pani y Ricardo de Robina, propusieron una nueva ubicación del altar y del coro para adecuar el espacio interno de la catedral a los imperativos litúrgicos ordenados por el Concilio Vaticano II. Aquí se analizan los argumentos de ambos partidos, y reflexiona sobre su importancia en la historia de las ideas contemporáneas en México.
