En el artículo se analizan los escritos y las ilustraciones costumbristas que aparecieron en tres publicaciones periódicas mexicanas decimonónicas, teniendo como objetivo indagar el papel que estos textos e imágenes cumplieron en la construcción de la identidad nacional. Siguiendo esta línea de análisis, se explora la manera cómo se configuró la mirada costumbrista y las características que adoptó en la coyuntura específica de la década de los años cincuenta del siglo XIX, en la cual parece haberse producido un tránsito significativo en la representación de los habitantes de la nación: de los tipos locales y regionales, se pasó a los arquetipos nacionales.
