This paper describes the circumstances that prevailed during this decade, as well as some of the Catholic Church's reactions in Chiapas, for public attitudes were not historically documented until the 1920s. Los años treinta del siglo XX fueron en Chiapas, al igual que en otros estados del sureste mexicano, los de mayor persecución religiosa. No obstante, las políticas anticlericales iniciaron con anterioridad al amparo de las directrices dictadas por los gobiernos mexicanos en turno, especialmente en el periodo carrancista. Las páginas que a continuación se presentan reflejan ciertas circunstancias dadas al respecto en la década de estudio, así como algunas reacciones que tuvo la Iglesia católica en Chiapas durante este periodo, puesto que la documentación referida a la actitud de la sociedad civil sólo aparece en la documentación histórica a partir de la década de los veinte.
