At the same time, to guarantee the support of independent mule-drivers and their workers, they established client-patron relationships through godparentage and guarantees of protection, as well as strict codes of labor discipline. The text analyzes the causes of this transport company’s bankruptcy and the social repercussions that this event may have had on the economy of New Spain. |

La autora estudia el negocio de Pedro de Vértiz, mercader especializado en el transporte de plata y otros productos de Real Hacienda y de particulares. Ubica a Vértiz y Oteiza y su primo, yerno y apoderado, Juan José de Oteiza y Vértiz, como grandes empresarios miembros de un linaje de origen navarro que fundó el desarrollo de sus negocios en una cadena de emigrantes basada en fuertes lazos endogámicos de parentesco y paisanaje. Mientras que, para garantizar el apoyo de arrieros independientes y de sus trabajadores establecía lealtades primordiales de tipo clientelar, de compadrazgo y protección, además de estrictos códigos de disciplina laboral. Analiza algunas de las causas por las que la casa de conductas se fue a la quiebra y las repercusiones sociales que pudo haber tenido dicho suceso en la economía novohispana.
