| description | This text analyzes the patriarchal network of Tomás Ruiz de Apodaca, a merchant from Cadiz, in order to examine strategies of upward mobility, political influence and bureaucratic intervention in the Spanish colonies. Access to employment, an old subject for institutional historiography, is enriched with an analysis of the complex ties of reciprocity, loyalty and protection offered by Ruiz de Apodaca in order to weave the network of relationships needed to allow him to operate over a wide geographic area and at a variety of levels of power and bureaucratic decision-making. By examining ethnic background, kinship (both consanguineous and by affinity), the coordinated actions of professional intermediaries and corruption, we can see how the networks and bureaucratic institutions of the old regime were articulated through informal decision-making mechanisms based around information, favors and trust. |

El autor incursiona en el análisis de la red patriarcal, la del comerciante gaditano Tomás Ruiz de Apodaca, para examinar las estrategias de ascenso social, influencia política e intervención en decisiones burocráticas de la corona española en las Indias. La provisión de empleos, un viejo tema de la historiografía institucional, se enriquece con el análisis de la complejidad de lazos de reciprocidad, lealtad y protección que ofreció Ruiz de Apodaca para tejer una malla de relaciones que le permitió actuar en un amplio radio geográfico y a diversa escala de las estructuras de poder y decisión burocrática. Los valores asociados con su trama de interés como el paisanaje, el parentesco consanguíneo o de afinidad, así como la acción concertada de intermediarios profesionales y recursos de corrupción destacan los mecanismos informales de decisión en donde información, favores y confianza condensan la articulación de la red y las instituciones burocráticas de antiguo régimen.
