La teoría de la conspiración, la idea de que los males de la nación tienen su origen en las acciones conspirativas de determinados grupos sociopolíticos, en la mayoría de los casos con un fuerte componente xenófobo, ha tenido un papel central en el nacimiento y desarrollo de la mayoría de los movimientos nacionalistas. El análisis de las imágenes difundidas por El Hijo del Ahuizote, una revista popular mexicana publicada a caballo entre los siglos XIX y XX, arroja mucha luz sobre la forma en que la imagen del “gachupín” fue instrumentalizada por un cierto nacionalismo mexicano del periodo, sobre algunas peculiaridades de este nacionalismo y de su incidencia en la vida política del país; también sobre las complejas relaciones del imaginario mexicano con España y lo español.
