| description | The indigenous population of Baja California was reduced significantly during the missionary period. However, in the early nineteenth century the declining demographic trend that led these peoples to extinction began to revert. The immigration of groups that settled in the former missions, in nearby ranches, along the coasts and in the mining regions in the Southern part of the península gave place to an unstable but important demographic growth in the region. This work reviews this demographic rocess in its different stages, by analyzing the census and regtsters of religious and civil authorities of the Baja California península. |

La población indígena de Baja California se redujo, de manera notable, a lo largo de la época misional; sin embargo, a principios del siglo XIX empezó a revestirse la tendencia demográfica declinante que llevó a los californianos del sur a la extinción. La inmigración de individuos que se asentaron en las antiguas misiones, en ranchos aledaños a ellas, en algunos puntos de la costa y en la zona minera sudpeninsular dio lugar a una dinámica demográfica que, aunque inestable, generó un crecimiento poblacional importante en la región. En este artículo se revisa este nuevo proceso demográfico en sus diferentes etapas, a partir del análisis de censos y padrones elaborados por las autoridades religiosas y civiles de la península de Baja California.
