| description | During the nineteenth century, civil and ecclesiastical authorities made important efforts to implant in the population moral values in tune with the liberal and conservative ideas of the groups in power. During the Porfiriato, in a country in which secularization and positivist ideas gained ground, the liberal State maintained its intention of the “moral creation” of the new Mexicans it required. Despite all these efforts, the values that were transmitted did not manage to alter some habits strongly enrooted among a society apparently assuming the “worldly” and “divine” risks of its behavior. By studying proclaimed moral values and opposing them to daily practices, the author reveals the lack of correspondence between them, which leads us to dispute the effectiveness of these moral policies. |

Durante el siglo XIX, las autoridades civiles y eclesiásticas realizaron importantes esfuerzos por inculcar entre la población valores morales, acordes con las convicciones liberales o conservadoras de quienes ostentaban el poder. Ya en el porfiriato, en un país en el que la secularización se consolidaba y las ideas del positivismo ganaban terreno, el Estado liberal mantuvo la intención de “crear moralmente” al nuevo mexicano que el país requería. Sin embargo, a pesar de los múltiples esfuerzos desplegados, los valores transmitidos no lograron alterar algunos hábitos arraigados entre la población, en una sociedad que parecía asumir los riesgos “terrenales” y “divinos” que sus comportamientos implicaban. Así, al estudiar los valores morales pregonados y confrontarlos con las prácticas cotidianas, destaca la falta de correspondencia entre unos y otros, que obliga a cuestionar la efectividad de las políticas emprendidas.
