El inicio de la biología en México estuvo rodeado por fuertes debates en distintas instituciones en las que intentó abordarse su estudio a principios del siglo XX. Su introductor, Alfonso L. Herrera, trató de romper con lo que él consideraba una historia natural anquilosada, para dar paso al estudio de los grandes pro- blemas de la vida, entre ellos su origen y evolución. En este artículo se presenta la lucha sostenida por Herrera, entrelazada estrechamente con los movimientos sociales ocurridos en el país en esa época.
