Description
Résumé:The  dawn of  biology  in Mexico  was  surrounded by strong debates in the institutions that tried to study  this subject in the early twentieth century. Biology’s Mexican promoter and introducer,  Alfonso  L. Herrera, attempted to break  with  what  he considered  old-fashioned  natural  history,  in order to begin studying  the great problems of life, among them, its origin and evolution. This paper describes Herrera’s struggle, which was tightly intertwined with the social problems  occuring in Mexico at the time.
