Description
Résumé:The  originality of 19th century Mexican thought can only be understood in direct relation to European polemics of the time. The expression and evolution of national sensibilities is not fully comprehensible outside the context of vigorous ideological debates facilitated by the intense circulation  of written texts. It is here  that the reediting  and  translation of  European works played a fundamental  role, fanning the debate  which became a creative activity in the constitution of national identity.  This identity was  articulated  on a complex, contentious frontier where national preferences and changing realities met principles and programs which arose within the turbulent cycle of revolutions after 1789. A key and recurrent aspect of this debate was the political-religious struggle in the Catholic  world in crisis on both sides of the Atlantic.
