| description | During the second half of the nineteenth century, the papacy designed a specific reform for catholicism in Latin America, consisting in a gradual centralization of pontifical authority in detriment of the power exerted by local hierarchies. This process was known as Romanization and, in the case of Mexico, was translated into a series of actions including the arrival of special delegates from Rome with the purpose of intervening in the ecclesiastical reorganization of local churches and in the reshapement of Church-State relations. |
