Este trabajo tiene por objetivo analizar el establecimiento de las nuevas órdenes en la zona oriente de la Ciudad de México en el siglo XVI. Hago la distinción entre las nuevas órdenes que llegaron al virreinato hacia el último tercio del siglo XVI –jesuitas, mercedarios, carmelitas descalzos y franciscanos descalzos– y las viejas o primeras –franciscanos, dominicos y agustinos. Para entender dicha ocupación, en primera instancia elaboro un boceto general de la gestación de las nuevas órdenes en Europa, para después presentar aquéllas que pasaron a Indias y que finalmente se establecieron en el corazón del virreinato novohispano. Como veremos, esos institutos quedaron establecidos, en un primer momento, en la zona oriente de la urbe como una herramienta del episcopado para fortalecer su presencia y jurisdicción en la ciudad de México.
