| description | This article reconstructs and analyzes the concrete events that originated the 1968 student uprising in Mexico City. It centers on certain issues that intensified the inconformity between July 23rd and August 1st, such as the technical and tactical incompetence of the police during riots, the experience accumulated by students during demonstrations, the decisive participation of non-student groups (gangs, porros) during the first days of struggle in schools and streets, the underestimation of local and national governments regarding the nature and intensity of student inconformity. This paper also suggests that the students' physical and symbolic defense of high schools determined the immediate future of the movement. Finally, the author outlines the political crisis suffered by the national government due to the increasing student inconformity. |

This paper also suggests that the students' physical and symbolic defense of high schools determined the immediate future of the movement. Finally, the author outlines the political crisis suffered by the national government due to the increasing student inconformity. El artículo reconstruye y analiza los acontecimientos concretos que originaron la protesta estudiantil de 1968 en la ciudad de México. Se hace énfasis en algunos aspectos específicos, que contribuyeron a que la protesta escalara en intensidad entre el 23 de julio y el 1º de agosto: la incompetencia técnica y táctica de la policía antimotines; la eficacia de la experiencia estudiantil acumulada respecto a la movilización de protesta; la participación decisiva de jóvenes no estudiantes (pandilleros y porros) en las primeras jornadas de lucha en las escuelas y las calles; los errores de cálculo de los gobiernos nacional y local respecto a la naturaleza y magnitud de los agravios estudiantiles. Asimismo, el artículo propone que la defensa de los ámbitos físicos y simbólicos de las escuelas de bachillerato de parte de los estudiantes desempeñó un papel catalizador fundamental respecto al futuro mediato del movimiento. Finalmente, el trabajo esboza la naturaleza de la crisis política experimentada por el gobierno nacional ante la escalada de la protesta estudiantil.
