El trabajo pretende establecer la situación de la agroindustria azucarera del Estado de México en la primera mitad del siglo XIX, asentada fundamentalmente en lo que fue el distrito de Cuernavaca (Morelos), a partir del análisis de dos factores básicos: la producción mercantil de las haciendas azucareras y sus mercados. El propósito es doble: realizar una contribución a la discusión general sobre el desempeño de la economía mexicana en la primera mitad del siglo XIX; determinar una temporalidad específica para el desarrollo de dicha agroindustria a lo largo del siglo XIX.
