This case contrasts with the management and exploitation of the same institution in other Spanish colonial properties, which also held monopolies of different products, including tobacco. This study shows that the tobacco monopoly was during the Eighteenth-century one of the Real Hacienda's favorite fiscal instruments for increasing revenues with which to promote economic development in certain colonies. The author's main conclusions refer to the mechanisms through which the Real Hacienda de la Nueva España used tobacco revenues to strengthen the economy of Louisiana. |

Este artículo analiza la política tabacalera de la corona española en la Luisiana durante el siglo XVIII, donde erigió una institución fiscal con fines predominantemente políticos, subordinando el interés en los rendimientos y ganancias económicos de este monopolio a las necesidades político-estratégicas de la región. El caso contrasta en relación con el funcionamiento y aprovechamiento de la institución en otras posesiones de la monarquía, donde también existían monopolios de diversos productos, incluyendo el del tabaco. El trabajo demuestra que el monopolio del tabaco fue, durante el siglo XVIII, un instrumento fiscal privilegiado por la Real Hacienda para aumentar sus ingresos y financiar, mediante ellos, el fomento de la economía de algunas colonias. Su principal aportación reside en el estudio de los mecanismos por los cuales, por medio de la renta del tabaco, la Real Hacienda de la Nueva España financió el fomento de la economía de la Luisiana.
